God's broken heart

‘Thus says the LORD:
I remember you,
The kindness of your youth,
The love of your betrothal,
When you went after Me
in the wilderness,
In a land not sown.
...
Thus says the LORD:
What injustice have your fathers found in Me,
That they have gone far from Me,
Have followed idols,
And have become idolaters?
...
Be astonished, O heavens, at this,
And be horribly afraid;
Be very desolate,” says the LORD.
For My people have committed two evils:
They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,
And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water
."
...

Jeremiah 2:2,5,12-13, NKJV

Can't you just hear the heartbreak of a righteous, faithful, and devoted God? Do you notice what those "two evils" were?

I am appalled that I can often be so unkind to Him, so idolatrous, so adulterous - while I can find no fault in Him.

I am astonished that my actions affect Him so deeply.

They affect Him so because He loves me. And because He loves you. The God Who made the heavens and the earth, and all that fills them lets us get close enough to break His heart, to abandon Him for far lesser things. And He loves us anyway. He would take us back.
